Spotify Says That It Will Suspend Service in Russia

UN General Assembly: Suspend Russia's Membership on the Human Rights Council - Human Rights House Foundation

New news has been circulating that Spotify Says That It Will Suspend Service in Russia. Here are the details:

Spotify responds to Russia’s new media law by shutting down its service in that country. The company announced they would no longer operate within Russian borders indefinitely, claiming an “unprovoked attack on Ukraine” from Moscow, making it illegal for them to report any events or details about military actions taken during conflict timeframes without needing permission.

“Spotify has continued to believe that it’s critically important to try to keep our service operational in Russia to provide trusted, independent news and information from the region,”
The company said

“Unfortunately, recently enacted legislation further restricting access to information, eliminating free expression, and criminalizing certain types of news puts the safety of Spotify’s employees and the possibility of even our listeners at risk.”

The end of this service is insight. One person said that it’s expected to be early April when things will finally shut down. Also, another streaming provider Netflix recently suspended operations due to their lack of desire or plans on adding state-run channels into the Russian version, which means people who want access won’t have much choice left.
