In a world where social media is king, Elon Musk seems intent on becoming the owner of a big social media platform. The Tesla founder has been spotted considering getting into an industry that Twitter and other platforms have made richly lucrative for themselves.
In a move that has sparked debate on Twitter, tech magnate Musk asked his followers to engage with a poll asking whether or not the platform was still fit for purpose. The question of free speech is at stake here as well- many people believe this type of social media should be banned due to its lack of promoting positive messages. Instead, so much negativity is shared among users throughout all hours long days.
“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy” Elon Musk
Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SolarCity Corporation (a company that produces solar panels), said on Twitter: “The future is bright for those who vote yes. It’s dark for those voting no.” He accompanied this tweet with an image showing what appeared to be polled from each side labelled ‘Yes’ or “No’. The poll results were overwhelming, as reported by 70% more people choosing negatively compared side-by-“don’t know.”
@elonmusk on Twitter has been sounding off about how he feels website freedoms are being restricted. In particular, hate speech and free expression violations seem to be sticking out in his mind lately- so much that he posted an open question asking if there needed “to create a new platform.”
Musk is always looking for new ways to improve society, and he recently revealed his plans on Twitter. The CEO says that if things go well with the company’s current trajectory, it might be time to set up an online platform where users can post their thoughts without fear of censorship or suppression from governments worldwide.
It will be interesting to see what Musk does now that he is no longer just the CEO of Tesla and its largest investor. His vision might have been flawed and his task complicated, but when people with money set their minds toward something, they can accomplish anything.
